Hands Across The Shawarma
I’ve bridged the cultural divide between East and West, and all it took was meat on a stick. In today’s Not For Tourists Guidebook “On Our Radar” section, read my article about four of the juiciest shawarma joints in town.
And then, if you still haven’t gotten in the mood shawarma, read an article I wrote for Attache Magazine about a Kurdish shawarma stand in Madrid that would make Saddam Hussein feel like a schmuck in the “Published Food Writing” section of the Famous Fat Dave Five Borough Eating Tour On The Wheels of Steel website. Long live Kurdistan.

Thrilled with the site and going to be a good resource if I pick NYC as my next living destination.
Btw, if you like shawarma (or other meat on a stick), my favorites are off Ditmars right near the Ditmars stop on the N/W train into Queens. Extra lemon juice and some lemon salt with fresh bread!

There are a couple of good shawarma places around Times Square. Pick-a-pita is on w. 38th street and makes a great chicken shawarma. It’s also glatt kosher. I also tried a turkish place on 9th and 40th yesterday that made a pretty good chicken shawarma and great veggies and onions.

Agree on your idea to user schwarma as a bridge to middle eastern culture. You never hear of a hate crime against a schwarma stand or schwarma-stand employee. This is likely because any possible perpetrator could not live with himself/herself knowing that they have disrupted the scwarma/pita economy in some way. Everyone who is capable of eating this tasty sandwich loves it and loves other people who eat it too. In contrast, one frequently hears of attacks on western fast food restaurants abroad. I often wondered if the person who bombed that KFC in Karachi a few months ago had ever sampled the Colonel’s secret blend of herbs spices.

Hey Dave,
I’ve been seeing Israeli guy…i’ve been for the past 7 months now and we’re not exactly a “couple” but we’re working on that and so we’re both very romantic people and I’ve trying to get something for us to do. I’ve decided to have a surprise candle-lit picnic dinner our favorite park in the city, and have all his favorite dishes well-prepared. His sister told me he loves Shawarma and good home-cooked morroccean fish platters; so I googled different website for Isreali recipes. Your website was really insightful on showing me places I can go to purchase but I would rather try and make it myself…I guess it’s the whole idea of the thought that counts. If you have any more information for me please let me know.
Your page is exquisite regardless.
Thank you
Faye

Fatouma,
Thanks so much for the kind words. I’m with you on the dating an Israeli. My special lady friend is of Muslim descent and I’m Jewish and things are going great.
At this rate, you and me and our significant others are going to save the world in no time.
Anyhow, I don’t know any Israeli places but Sahadi’s on Atlantic Ave between Clinton and Court has EVERYTHING.

My life’s been basically bland today. More or less nothing seems worth thinking about. My mind is like an empty room. I’ve more or less been doing nothing to speak of. Not much on my mind recently.
