[...] It was midnight in Austin, Texas. My friend Gary - Brooklynite, sushi eating champion - and I were in the midst of a cross-country road trip. We just spent a lovely evening eating queso and drinking margaritas with some hospitable UT kids. But we had no place to crash because, contrary to my assumption that all of Texas is full of wide open spaces, these grad students were packed in like sardines. We may as well have been back in New York. There wasn’t even any floor space to spare. [...]

[...] Yes, this Big Washinsky is the very same man I profiled a few months back during my all-you-can-eat sushi in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn expose. So it is not surprising, with all of those untold hours of training under his belt, that he felt it possible to take down a sushi-eating record here in Manhattan. It’s called the Yummy Village Sushi Challenge. Eat one more piece than anyone ever has within 20 minutes, and the meal, now valued at somewhere around $150 depending on what’s ordered, is free. [...]

$.50 a piece?! That works out to 36 pieces of sushi...I was throughly impressed with those numbers (and a bit nauseated at the thought of me trying to eat that much =), but I had to give a kudos to Gary when I read 54!!!! OMG - that is intense!
I really enjoyed this piece-I need to research and see what NoVa/DC has to offer...never realized you could find AYCE sushi, but then again, NY has it all!
Thanks for the blog!

Ooh, I love sushi! We once tore down the house... but alas, those eating days are far behind me. I have to maintain my girlish figure, you see!

http://feistyfoodie.blogspot.com/2005/07/yuka.html My most recent and only documented visit to an AYCE sushi place :)

Holy american league eastern divison champs did I get some new wave hair cut. I guess this is the chance you take once you make it into a picture instead of the being one of the mysterious people who took the picture when famous himself is in the frame. Get your ring mus-sie, ja-son get your ring clap clap, bernie-legacy (just in case), and number one win-for-donnie clap clap . . . clap clap clap!!
