Famous Fat Dave: The Hungry Cabbie

Seventeen Minutes Of Gluttony

I hear YouTube.Com just changed hands for a billion and half dollars. I’m betting that at least a buck of that was because I posted a 17-minute Famous Fat Dave’s Faves Tour this summer. Even though we shot it in my Maxima rather than a yellow cab and we only hit two boroughs, you’ll get a pretty good feel for how a Famous Fat Dave tour goes down.

Josh Ozersky, also known as Mr. Cutlets, listed the clip as one of “America’s Amusingest Food Videos” in New York Magazine’s Grub Street. My cousin, Jeremy Weinstein, also known as Joe Hollywood, edited it, and rumors are already flying about a long-awaited nod from the Academy for his work.

  1. That’s got to be the best film on YouTube. Great job. You should definitely have a TV show, Dave. Sorry I didn’t get to come to the FoodCandy meet up. It would have been nice to shake your hand.

Would love to take a vegetarian tour some time.

  2. I agree with Deb - you ought to have a food show - that video is so great!

Now come to VA so we can do a video about CRABS at Cap’t Pells! -

    Great share, thanks!

  3. Thanks Dave- you have spurred me to plan my next trip home- first stop outside of JFK will be L&B- gotta get a square! I like mine with no handle- can be a little messier, but more flavor per square inch… keep ‘em comin Dave

  4. Great video Dave. You seem like a cool dude. Video should be a regular part of the site.

  5. Dave,
    Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
    Two questions:
    1. The Red Hook Ballfields - when does that whole thing end for the season, and what - amongst the vast selection - do you recommend?
    2. The Pie on a stick joint - where is that? I know it’s Red Hook, but do you have a street address?
(Okay…so that was actually three questions)

  6. Hi Peter,

    1. Don’t know when it ends. This video was from the beginning of the summer. I haven’t been back.
1.5 We ate papusas and they were great. They’re like those corn and mozz things you get at street fairs but WAY better. Everything is good though, and you can’t miss because everything is cheap so if you don’t like it, just order something else.
    2. Check under “Red Hook” in my category list for the pie on a stick. It’s on Pier 41 which is a left turn off Van Dyck Street as you toward the water (I think). Here’s the link to the fist thing I wrote about it:

  7. Thanks.
Just found out that this weekend, ending with Sunday the 21st, is the last.

By the way, if you dig pupusas, El Comal, on Hillside Avenue (near the corner of 150th in Briarwood), serves ‘em up cheap and tastey. Also, check out El Reys, about two blocks away, for the heaping plate of grub known as the “Dominican Breakfast”. Wash it down with some spanish coffee - keep you going for daze (no spelling error, there).

  8. Do you know what your writings do to those of us who DON’T get to eat all day, and just sit in an office and read about and look at pictures of amazing food?

No, you don’t. And why should you? Even your NBC job involved eating food…

    that’s it, i’m getting a cheesesteak…

  9. Awesome stuff man - I agree whole heartedly with others who have said you should make a tv show, that would rock. Think about it… :)
